What Is CISCO-VISM-SESSION-MIB?

CISCO-VISM-SESSION-MIB manages MGCP/H.248 media gateway session configuration and call-control state on Cisco VISM (Voice Interworking Service Module) ATM voice gateway modules, structured around session sets, session groups, and underlying RUDP sessions used for fault-tolerant connectivity to Media Gateway Controllers (MGCs). It exposes both configuration (session set/group structure, fault-tolerance mode) and runtime state (active group, switchover counts) data. Its monitoring value centers on software/service status: vismSessionSetState reveals whether a voice-signaling session set is operational, while vismSessionSetSwitchFails and vismSessionSetSwitchSuccesses track how often the gateway has failed over between active and standby MGC connections, a direct indicator of MGC-connection instability. It depends conceptually on RUDP and MGCP/H.248 as the underlying transport and signaling protocols it manages. It is deployed on Cisco MGX-based ATM voice gateway platforms carrying voice trunk signaling in legacy telecom/carrier voice networks. Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll vismSessionSetTable/vismSessionSetEntry, checking vismSessionSetState and vismSessionSetActiveGrp to confirm which session group is currently active and that the set is in a healthy operating state. A rising vismSessionSetSwitchFails count alongside a low vismSessionSetSwitchSuccesses count would indicate the gateway is repeatedly failing to switch over to its standby MGC connection, a serious fault-tolerance problem. Checking vismSessionSetFaultTolerant confirms whether a given session set is even configured for redundancy, and vismSessionGrpTable/vismSessionGrpEntry rows show the individual RUDP session groups underlying each set.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using vismSessionSetSwitchFails OID:

Select a Cisco VISM (Voice Interworking Service Module) card, MGX platform (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type vismSessionSetSwitchFails into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The accumulated number of failed attempts to 'switch' between session groups in this session set. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
