What Is BASIS-MIB?

BASIS-MIB defines the OID subtree structure used by Cisco's StrataCom-derived MGX/BASIS voice and ATM switching platform, providing the organizational hierarchy for system, card, and line-level management objects. It groups objects into categories covering overall system identity (basisSystem), physical card inventory and status (cardGeneric, cardSpecific), and line-level interfaces (basisLines), rather than being a purely empty registration module. Because it defines these card-level object groups, it is used for BASIS-MIB SNMP monitoring of hardware presence and status, i.e. which cards/modules are installed and their generic versus model-specific attributes, as part of chassis health checks on the switch. It sits under Cisco's stratacom enterprise OID branch and is depended on by other MIBs in that family. It's deployed on Cisco/StrataCom MGX-series multiservice ATM/voice switches in carrier and enterprise telecom environments.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BASIS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • installed card inventory
  • card-specific status/model detail
  • line-level interface status
  • system identity

Supported Devices

  • Cisco/StrataCom MGX-series multiservice switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cardGeneric to enumerate installed cards in the chassis and check cardSpecific for model-specific status details, revealing whether an expected line card is present, missing, or reporting a fault. basisLines would be checked for line-level interface status on the switch's voice/ATM trunks, while basisSystem provides overall system identity used to correlate chassis-level alarms with the specific switch being managed.
