Description: TIMETRA-ISIS-MIB module

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TIMETRA-ISIS-MIB?

TIMETRA-ISIS-MIB is part of Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent's TIMETRA enterprise MIB family, providing SROS-specific extensions for managing the IS-IS routing protocol on 7x50 series service routers. It exposes vRtrIsisTable (per virtual router) covering enable/restart timing, authentication settings, route export policies, and LSP lifetime, alongside broader vRtrIsisSystemObjs and vRtrIsisIfObjs branches for system- and interface-level IS-IS state. It is used to monitor software status of the routing protocol: vRtrIsisLastEnabledTime reveals when IS-IS was last (re)started on a virtual router, which helps correlate routing instability with a protocol restart, while authentication objects confirm security is properly enforced. It explicitly extends the standard IS-IS MIB concepts (RFC 4444) with Alcatel-Lucent/Nokia virtual-router-specific objects rather than replacing them. It is deployed on Nokia SROS core and edge routers (7750 SR, 7450 ESS, 7710 SR) running IS-IS as the IGP for MPLS backbones. Engineers can download the TIMETRA-ISIS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TIMETRA-ISIS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent SROS routers (7750 SR, 7450 ESS, 7710 SR)

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll vRtrIsisTable per virtual router and watch vRtrIsisLastEnabledTime for an unexpected jump, signaling that IS-IS was recently restarted and could explain a burst of routing convergence events. vRtrIsisAuthType and vRtrIsisAuthCheck would be checked to confirm authentication is enforced consistently across virtual routers, catching a misconfigured router that's accepting unauthenticated adjacencies. vRtrIsisExportPolicy1 through Policy5 would be reviewed to verify the expected route-export policy chain is applied.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IS-IS last-enabled/restart time
  • authentication key and type
  • authentication check enforcement
  • export route policies
  • LSP lifetime setting

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using vRtrIsisSpfRuns OID:

Select a Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent SROS router (7750 SR, 7450 ESS, 7710 SR) (IS-IS protocol restart/authentication status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type vRtrIsisSpfRuns into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The value of vRtrIsisSpfRuns indicates the number of times shortest path first calculations have been made. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
