What Is ISIS-MIB?

ISIS-MIB is an IETF-standard MIB module defining managed objects for the IS-IS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) routing protocol as specified in ISO 10589, adapted here for building IP routing tables per RFC 1195. It exposes routing-protocol data categories: system-level IS-IS configuration and level parameters, adjacency and area information, link-state database contents, and protocol notifications/traps for events like adjacency changes. Its monitoring role is focused on protocol/software operational status rather than physical hardware - administrators use it to confirm IS-IS is running with the expected level configuration, that neighbor adjacencies are up, and to be alerted via traps when adjacencies or areas change state, which reveals routing instability or misconfiguration. As a routing-protocol MIB it depends on and complements standard MIB-II interface objects to correlate IS-IS state with the underlying network interfaces. An ISIS-MIB OID under the isisSystem or isisObjects subtree is what an NMS would poll to build a live view of adjacency and topology health. It is deployed on any vendor-neutral router or Layer 3 switch running IS-IS, common in large service-provider and enterprise core networks.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll isisSysLevel-related objects to confirm a router's configured IS-IS level (Level 1, Level 2, or both) matches design intent, and watch for isisNotifications traps such as adjacency state changes to catch a neighbor going down. Objects under isisSystem give the baseline protocol configuration state, while the isisObjects subtree groups the adjacency, area, and link-state data an NMS would poll to build a live view of IS-IS topology health.
