Description: TIMETRA-L2TP-MIB module

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TIMETRA-L2TP-MIB?

TIMETRA-L2TP-MIB is Alcatel-Lucent/Nokia's SROS MIB for managing and provisioning Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) on 7750 SR routers, used for tunneling PPP or other Layer 2 sessions over an IP network. It exposes a table of L2TP tunnel/group configuration objects covering administrative state, session limits, receive window size, AVP (attribute-value pair) handling policy, peer address change policy, and accounting policy association, along with a last-management-change timestamp. Its monitoring value is centered on tunneling service software status: an operator can confirm whether an L2TP tunnel group is administratively up, check whether it is near its configured session limit, and correlate recent configuration changes with observed tunnel behavior. It is a Nokia SROS proprietary MIB conceptually built on the IETF L2TP protocol standard (RFC 2661/3931) though not a direct extension of an existing IETF L2TP MIB. It is typically deployed by broadband/VPN service providers running L2TP tunnel aggregation on 7750 SR routers, where TIMETRA-L2TP-MIB SNMP monitoring tracks tunnel group state and session-limit utilization.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TIMETRA-L2TP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR (SROS) router

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll tmnxL2tpTable entries for tmnxL2tpAdminState and tmnxL2tpSessionLimit to confirm a tunnel group is enabled and see how close active sessions are to its configured ceiling, while tmnxL2tpReceiveWindowSize and tmnxL2tpAvpExclude reveal protocol tuning that could affect throughput or interoperability with a peer LNS/LAC. Checking tmnxL2tpLastMgmtChange or tmnxL2tpTableLastCh against a recent outage would help correlate a tunnel disruption with a configuration change, and tmnxL2tpAccountingPolicy confirms whether session accounting is being applied for billing/troubleshooting. A tunnel group hitting its tmnxL2tpSessionLimit would explain new session setup failures reported by subscribers.

What Can Be Monitored

  • L2TP tunnel group administrative state
  • L2TP session count vs session limit
  • L2TP receive window size / AVP policy
  • last management change timestamp
  • L2TP accounting policy association

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using tmnxL2tpStatTotalTunnels OID:

Select a Nokia/Alcatel-Lucent 7750 SR (SROS) router (L2TP tunnel-group admin/session-limit status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type tmnxL2tpStatTotalTunnels into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The value of tmnxL2tpStatTotalTunnels indicates the total number of tunnel set up attempts since the last re-initialization of the local network management subsystem, or the last time the system statistics were cleared. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
