Description: Monitors MEF Service OAM performance metrics including delay and loss measurements.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is MEF-SOAM-PM-MIB?

MEF-SOAM-PM-MIB is a Metro Ethernet Forum (MEF) standards-based MIB module for Ethernet Service OAM Performance Monitoring, layered on top of IEEE 802.1ag/ITU-T Y.1731 Connectivity Fault Management (CFM). It exposes configuration and results for active performance-measurement sessions on Maintenance End Points (MEPs), covering frame loss measurement (LM), delay measurement (DM), and synthetic loss measurement (SLM). This MIB is used primarily for performance/service-quality monitoring rather than classic hardware health: administrators configure and poll per-MEP loss- and delay-measurement sessions to detect degraded Ethernet service quality, excessive latency, or packet loss along a carrier Ethernet path. It explicitly depends on the base CFM MIB (for MEP definitions) and companion MEF textual-conventions and SOAM-FM (fault management) MIBs referenced in its documentation. It is typically deployed on carrier Ethernet switches and routers at the edges of Metro Ethernet networks to provide SLA-verification performance data to service providers and customers. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the MEF-SOAM-PM-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MEF-SOAM-PM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • carrier Ethernet switches and routers (Metro Ethernet Forum-compliant)
  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll mefSoamPmMepTable/mefSoamPmMepEntry to view configured performance-monitoring sessions per Maintenance End Point, checking mefSoamPmMepLmSingleEndedResponder and mefSoamPmMepDmSingleEndedResponder to confirm loss- and delay-measurement responder roles are active. mefSoamLmCfgTable, indexed by mefSoamLmCfgIndex, would be checked for mefSoamLmCfgType and mefSoamLmCfgEnabled to verify a loss-measurement session is correctly configured and running. A sustained rise in measured frame loss or delay reported through these sessions would indicate a degrading Ethernet service path, prompting an SLA violation investigation, and mefSoamPmNotifications would alert operators to threshold-crossing events.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-MEP loss measurement (LM) sessions
  • per-MEP delay measurement (DM) sessions
  • synthetic loss measurement (SLM) sessions
  • measurement session enable/configuration state
  • performance threshold-crossing notifications

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using mefSoamLmCurrentAvailStatsForwardAvailable OID:

Select a device implementing MEF-SOAM-PM-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type mefSoamLmCurrentAvailStatsForwardAvailable into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object contains the number of availability indicators evaluated as available in the forward direction by this MEP during this Measurement Interval. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
