What Is HP-ICF?

HP-ICF is the root SNMP MIB module for HP's Integrated Communication Facility (ICF) enterprise product line, the proprietary architecture underlying many HP/HPE ProCurve and Aruba-branded switches and wireless products. Rather than exposing hardware sensors directly, it defines base error-extension objects and the OID registration point that all other HP-ICF-prefixed MIBs (OOBM, URPF, firewall, PAE, etc.) build upon. One documented object provides enterprise-specific detailed error codes returned when an SNMP SET request fails, giving management stations more granular diagnostic information than the standard PDU errorStatus, including cases that would otherwise just report a generic genErr. In this sense it supports monitoring management-plane software status — specifically the success or failure detail of configuration changes made via SNMP — rather than physical hardware telemetry. It underlies and is a required dependency of the entire family of HP-ICF-* product MIBs, and is deployed wherever HP ICF-architecture switches, routers, or wireless controllers are managed via SNMP. Engineers can download the HP-ICF file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HP-ICF. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

A management application that issues an SNMP SET to change a switch configuration object and receives a genErr can consult the HP-ICF error-extension object to retrieve a more specific enterprise error code explaining exactly why the SET failed, rather than just a generic failure indicator. This is useful for automated configuration tools that need to distinguish transient from permanent SET failures across a fleet of HP ICF-based switches.
