Description: IANA MIB defining textual conventions for storage media type identifiers used in storage management MIBs.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is IANA-STORAGE-MEDIA-TYPE-MIB?

IANA-STORAGE-MEDIA-TYPE-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF/IANA MIB module that defines textual conventions (enumerated type definitions) for identifying the media type of a storage device, such as disk, tape, or other storage media classes. It does not itself expose any runtime instance data or tables; instead it supplies a standard set of named constants that other storage-management MIBs reference when reporting a device's media type. Its role in monitoring is purely as a supporting vocabulary: MIBs such as host-resources or storage-specific vendor MIBs use these textual conventions to report the type of storage media in a disk/tape status table, aiding in hardware inventory and status classification rather than reporting health metrics directly. As an IANA-maintained module it is explicitly designed to be imported by other storage MIBs (e.g., HOST-RESOURCES-MIB extensions or SCSI/RAID vendor MIBs), making it a foundational dependency rather than a standalone monitoring tool. It is used across any SNMP-managed device with storage subsystems, from servers to storage arrays, wherever a MIB needs to report storage media type in a standard way, as codified in the IANA-STORAGE-MEDIA-TYPE-MIB RFC registration maintained by IANA.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in IANA-STORAGE-MEDIA-TYPE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer; applies to any device with storage subsystems (servers, storage arrays, NAS)

Monitoring Examples

This module is a textual-convention/conformance-style definition module with no runtime data objects of its own; it defines an enumerated StorageMediaType convention rather than any Table/Entry structure to poll. A monitoring system never queries this MIB directly for live values, it only encounters its defined enumeration values when another MIB's storage table (e.g., a disk-media-type column) reports a device's media type using this convention.
