Category: SNMP Framework, Textual Conventions and Registries, Vendor: Fibronics (Legacy)

Description: Fibronics enterprise top-level MIB defining the OID registration hierarchy and base management objects for Fibronics network products.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is FIBRONICS-MIB?

FIBRONICS-MIB is the enterprise top-level SMI registration MIB for Fibronics, an early networking equipment vendor whose products included multi-protocol chassis hubs supporting Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, and LocalTalk. It exposes chassis-level hardware inventory and configuration objects, including hardware type, slot count, and per-media-type bus counts, plus a generic agent inventory table. It supports monitoring physical chassis hardware status - confirming chassis hardware type (chHWType), how many slots and bus segments of each media type are populated (chNumberOfSlots, chNumberOfEthernetBuses, etc.), and issuing a supervisory chassis reset (chReset) - functioning as hardware presence/configuration monitoring rather than deep performance metrics. As a legacy enterprise-specific MIB it depends only on the base SNMP SMI structure rather than other standard MIBs. It was typically deployed in legacy multi-protocol LAN hub/chassis installations from the early-to-mid 1990s. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the FIBRONICS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FIBRONICS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Fibronics multi-protocol LAN chassis hubs
  • legacy Ethernet/Token Ring/FDDI/LocalTalk network hardware

Monitoring Examples

Polling chNumberOfSlots and chFullConfig against chHWType lets an operator confirm the chassis is populated as expected, while chNumberOfEthernetBuses, chNumberOfTRBuses, chNumberOfFDDIBuses, and chNumberOfLocalTalkBuses reveal how many segments of each media type are active on a multi-protocol Fibronics hub. The chGenAgTable/chGenAgEntry, indexed by chGenAgId with chGenAgType, provides a generic inventory of installed agent/module cards in the chassis. An unexpected drop in one of the bus-count objects after a chReset would flag a card or bus segment that failed to reinitialize.

What Can Be Monitored

  • chassis hardware type
  • number of slots
  • number of Ethernet/Token Ring/FDDI/LocalTalk buses
  • generic agent/module inventory
  • chassis reset capability
