Description: Defines IEEE 754 floating-point textual convention for use in IETF MIBs.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is FLOAT-TC-MIB?
FLOAT-TC-MIB is not a vendor device MIB but a small IETF-style textual-convention (TC) support module defining an IEEE 754 floating-point data type for use by other standards-based MIBs, per its stub module description. It does not expose device data of its own; rather, it exposes a general category of "definitions" — a reusable Float textual convention that other MIB modules can import to represent floating-point measurement values. Because it defines no object identifiers of its own, it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status by itself — it only enables other MIBs to represent floating-point sensor/measurement values (e.g., precise voltage, temperature, or frequency readings) with proper semantics. Its entire purpose is as a dependency: any MIB needing to express a true floating-point value imports this TC, making it foundational infrastructure for other IETF and vendor MIBs. It is not deployed as a standalone monitored entity; it underlies other MIBs on any SNMP-managed device that needs floating-point telemetry. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the FLOAT-TC-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in FLOAT-TC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based supporting MIB (textual convention definition), not tied to any specific device — used by other MIBs across any SNMP-managed device type
Monitoring Examples
This module defines only a textual convention (a data-type definition) and contains no object or table names of its own, so no concrete monitoring/polling scenario can be honestly described. Other MIBs that import the Float TC would use it to represent measurements like fractional temperature or voltage readings, but FLOAT-TC-MIB itself exposes nothing pollable.

RFC description
IETF standard SNMP MIB module (RFC 6340) defining textual conventions for representing IEEE 754 floating-point numbers (32-bit, 64-bit, and 128-bit formats) in SNMP MIB objects.
Start monitoring Vendor-neutral SNMP-managed device, any manufacturer (IEEE 754 float textual convention) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
