Category: Cisco Devices, Device Management

Description: Provides management objects for monitoring and controlling feature license activation and status on Cisco IOS and NX-OS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-FEATURE-CONTROL-MIB?

CISCO-FEATURE-CONTROL-MIB is a Cisco vendor-specific MIB for managing optional, often licensable, software features on Cisco IOS and NX-OS platforms, letting administrators enable or disable individual features and query their current operating state via SNMP. It exposes a table of all controllable features by name, along with the last administrative action taken, the result of that action, a failure reason if it didn't succeed, and the feature's current operational status. This is squarely a software-status monitoring MIB: the operational-status object reveals whether a given feature is actually enabled and running versus disabled or failed, and the last-action-result/failure-reason objects let an operator diagnose why an enable/disable action didn't take effect, for example due to a missing license. The MIB explicitly notes that the original feature-control table has been superseded by a newer version, indicating an evolving schema across Cisco software releases while retaining backward compatibility. It is typically deployed across Cisco IOS, IOS-XE, and NX-OS devices in enterprise and data center networks to remotely audit and control licensed feature activation. Engineers can download the CISCO-FEATURE-CONTROL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-FEATURE-CONTROL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IOS/IOS-XE router or switch
  • Cisco NX-OS switch

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll cfcFeatureCtrl2Table, the current table since cfcFeatureCtrlTable is superseded, to list cfcFeatureCtrlName entries and their cfcFeatureCtrlOpStatus, flagging any expected feature that shows as disabled or failed rather than operational. If a recent cfcFeatureCtrlAction to enable a feature didn't take effect, cfcFeatureCtrlLastActionResult and cfcFeatureCtrlLastFailureReason would be checked to see why, for example a missing license. cfcFeatureCtrlOpStatusReason supplements the raw operational status with a human-readable explanation useful in automated alerting.

What Can Be Monitored

  • feature enable/disable operational status
  • last feature control action and result
  • feature action failure reason
  • list of controllable features
