What Is CISCO-FIBRECHANNEL-MIB?

CISCO-FIBRECHANNEL-MIB is a Cisco-specific MIB defining physical-layer and protocol-level management objects for Fibre Channel interfaces on Cisco SAN switching devices, covering both controller-level status and detailed performance-monitoring (PM) counters. It exposes hardware/interface status such as controller administrative and operational status, alarm status, and loopback information, as well as performance counters for received/transmitted octets, packets, errors, and bad frame-check-sequence (FCS) counts. This MIB is heavily oriented toward hardware and link health monitoring: administrators use it to detect degraded or failed FC controllers via alarm and operational-status objects, and to spot early signs of physical-layer problems (rising error/bad-FCS counts) that precede link failures. Its performance-monitoring section explicitly follows a threshold-based early-detection design intended for service-provider-grade FC deployments. It is deployed in Cisco SAN switches and directors carrying Fibre Channel storage traffic where continuous link-quality monitoring is required. Engineers can download the CISCO-FIBRECHANNEL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would check coiFibreChanControllerTable/coiFibreChanControllerEntry, comparing coiFibreChanControllerAdminStatus to coiFibreChanControllerOperStatus and coiFibreChanControllerAlarmStatus to spot a controller that has gone into alarm despite being administratively enabled. Polling coiFcPmCurrentEntry for coiFcPmIfInOctets, coiFcPmRxTotalPkts, coiFcPmIfInErrors, and coiFcPmRxBadFcs over the coiFcPmCurrentIntervalType lets an operator see a rising bad-FCS or error rate on a specific FC port, signaling a marginal transceiver or fiber run before the link drops entirely. coiFibreChanControllerLoopbackInfo helps confirm whether a port has been placed into diagnostic loopback mode.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using coiFcPmIfInOctets OID:

Select a Cisco MDS/Nexus Fibre Channel switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type coiFcPmIfInOctets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object gives the number of bytes received since the last counter reset. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
