What Is CISCO-FC-TUNNEL-MIB?

CISCO-FC-TUNNEL-MIB is a Cisco-specific MIB for Fibre Channel SAN switches (MDS platforms) that configures and monitors tunnels carrying Fibre Channel traffic over TCP or UDP so that FC command and data traffic can be extended across an IP network. It exposes configuration objects such as tunnel endpoints, source/destination IP addresses and ports, and the associated FC interface, along with the tunnel's operational status. Its monitoring value is chiefly about confirming the software/logical health of the tunnel path: an operator can verify a given FC-over-IP tunnel is actually established and passing traffic, which is critical for detecting connectivity loss between geographically separated SAN fabrics (e.g. for disaster-recovery replication). It relies on standard IP addressing conventions (IPv4/IPv6 type-and-address pairs) alongside Cisco's FC interface identifiers. It is deployed in extended/metro SAN environments where Fibre Channel storage traffic must traverse an IP WAN, monitored through the CISCO-FC-TUNNEL-MIB MIB's tunnel status objects.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cftTcpTunnelTable/cftTcpTunnelEntry to inspect a tunnel by cftTcpTunnelName, checking cftTcpTunnelSrcIp/cftTcpTunnelDestIp (with their corresponding ...IpType objects) and the associated cftFiberChannelIf to confirm which FC interface is being tunneled. If a remote-replication tunnel between two SAN sites suddenly shows no traffic, checking cftTcpTunnelCmdSrcPort/cftTcpTunnelCmdDestPort and cftTcpTunnelDataSrcPort against expected values helps confirm whether the TCP session parameters have drifted or the tunnel has gone down. cftMaxTcpTunnels indicates how many such tunnels the switch can support, useful for capacity planning.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cftTcpTunnelCmdRxSegmentOctets OID:

Select a Cisco MDS Fibre Channel SAN switch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cftTcpTunnelCmdRxSegmentOctets into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of TCP segment bytes received in the FC TCP Command connection. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in bytes), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
