What Is AIRESPACE-WIRELESS-MIB?

AIRESPACE-WIRELESS-MIB is a private MIB originating from Airespace (acquired by Cisco, forming the basis of Cisco's Unified Wireless Network / WLC product line) for centralized WLAN controllers that terminate LWAPP tunnels from lightweight access points. It exposes a broad range of data: 802.11 SSID/ESS configuration, access point association and management, client sessions, AAA settings, mobility groups, IPsec, radio resource management, and global 802.11 parameters. Much of it is configuration-oriented, but objects like bsnDot11EssAdminStatus reflect the operational/software status of each wireless network, and radio resource management data supports detecting RF-level problems on associated access points, both relevant to overall WLAN service health. It builds on IEEE 802.11 standard concepts and the LWAPP tunnel architecture (precursor to CAPWAP, RFC 5415) between controller and access points. It is deployed on Airespace/Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers (the WLC 2000/4400/5500 family and successors) in enterprise campus Wi-Fi deployments. This is a heavily searched Cisco (Airespace heritage) MIB, since airespace-wireless-mib is the standard reference for monitoring Cisco Airespace/WLC wireless controller status via SNMP.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AIRESPACE-WIRELESS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

An admin polls bsnDot11EssTable/bsnDot11EssEntry (indexed by bsnDot11EssIndex) to check bsnDot11EssSsid, bsnDot11EssAdminStatus, and bsnDot11EssSecurityAuthType, confirming an SSID is administratively up and using the intended authentication method, which catches an accidental SSID shutdown or a security downgrade. bsnDot11EssSessionTimeout and bsnDot11EssMacFiltering reveal session and access-control policy in force, while bsnDot11EssStaticWEPSecurity, bsnDot11EssStaticWEPDefaultKey, and bsnDot11EssStaticWEPKeyIndex let an operator verify legacy WEP configuration consistency across controllers during a migration or audit.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using bsnTotalHandoffRequests OID:

Select a Cisco (Airespace) Wireless LAN Controller (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type bsnTotalHandoffRequests into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the total handoff requests. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
