What Is CISCO-ITP-GSP-MIB?

CISCO-ITP-GSP-MIB is a Cisco-specific MIB for managing Signalling Points on Cisco's IP Transfer Point (ITP), a hardware/software solution that transports SS7 (Signalling System No. 7) telecom traffic over IP networks, functioning like an SS7 signaling point. It exposes configuration and operational objects for signaling point profiles, utilization thresholds, and event sequencing used in telecom carrier signaling gateways. In monitoring terms it is used to track the operational and performance status of the SS7 signaling function—utilization sampling (cgspUtilSampleInterval, cgspUtilThreshold) acts as a load/performance indicator akin to CPU or link utilization, while cgspEventSequenceNumber and the notifications sub-tree (ciscoGspMIBNotifs) surface fault conditions. CISCO-ITP-GSP-MIB SNMP monitoring in a carrier NOC typically centers on exactly these utilization and event-sequence objects rather than the profile configuration itself. This module explicitly supersedes CISCO-ITP-SP-MIB and is built against ITU SS7 standards, so it depends on both that Cisco predecessor MIB's concepts and the underlying ITU-T SS7 specifications. It is deployed in telecom carrier networks where Cisco ITP nodes interconnect SS7 signaling networks with IP-based cores.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ITP-GSP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • signaling point utilization
  • utilization threshold breaches
  • profile configuration (MTP2 timers)
  • event sequence/fault notifications
  • CLLI code identification

Supported Devices

  • Cisco IP Transfer Point (ITP)

Monitoring Examples

An admin would monitor cgspUtilSampleInterval and cgspUtilThreshold together to see if signaling link utilization has crossed the configured threshold, with cgspUtilAbateDelta defining hysteresis before the alarm clears. The cgspProfileTable/cgspProfileEntry rows (keyed by cgspProfileName) expose per-profile settings like cgspProfileMtp2BundleTimer, letting an operator confirm MTP2 timer configuration matches expected SS7 link behavior. Rising cgspEventSequenceNumber values combined with entries under ciscoGspMIBNotifs would flag signaling point faults needing investigation.

ciscoGspMIB1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.336The MIB for managing Signalling Points and its associated messages transported over Signalling System No. 7 (SS7) Network via Cisco IP Transfer Point. This MIB replaces the CISCO-ITP-SP-MIB and provide support multiple instances of a signalling point within same configuration. The Cisco IP Transfer Point (ITP) is a hardware and software solution that transports SS7 traffic using IP. Each ITP node provides function similar to SS7 Signalling point. The relevant ITU documents describing this technology is the ITU Q series, including ITU Q.700: Introduction to CCITT Signalling System No. 7 and ITU Q.701 Functional description of the message transfer part (MTP) of Signalling System No. 7. CIT cgspCLLICode1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.336.1.1.1CItpTcCLLIread-writeCommon-Language Location Identification Codes (CLLI Codes). This object identifies the physical location of this device and can provide additional informaton on the device type.
NUM cgspUtilSampleInterval1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.336.1.1.2CgspSampleIntervalread-writeThis object specifies the time interval used to monitor the utilization of SS7 links. This object in combination with cgspUtilThreshold, cgspLinkPlanCapacitySent and cgspLinkPlanCapacityRcvd will be used to calculate utilization of SS7 links. Changes to the polling interval will take effect after the completion of the current sample interval.
CGS cgspUtilThreshold1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.336.1.1.3CgspPercentThresholdread-writeThis object specifies the threshold of usage for all SS7 links in SP. This object is used to determine when to generate the ciscoGspLinkRcvdUtilChange or ciscoGspLinkSentUtilChange notifications. A value of zero indicates that no default threshold is specified. Therefore, only links with non-zero values for cgspLinkUtilThresholdRcvd or cgspLinkUtilThresholdSent will generate notifications based on link utilization. Changes to the utilization threshold will take effect at the end of the current interval.
CGS cgspUtilAbateDelta1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.336.1.1.4CgspPercentThresholdread-writeThis object allows the falling threshold to be lower than the rising threshold when calculating whether to generate the ciscoGspLinkRcvdUtilChange or ciscoGspLinkSentUtilChange notifications. This is done to prevent generating notifications for slight changes in traffic.
CGS cgspPlanCapacityDefault1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.336.1.1.5CgspLinkCapacityread-writeThis object provides a default for value for links with a cgspLinkType='sctpIp'. For all other types of linkset this value is ignored. When a linkset based on SCTP/IP and the values for the cgspLinkPlanCapacityRcvd or cgspLinkPlanCapacitySent object are zero then this object will be used as the default. A value of zero indicates that a global default has not been specified. This object will be used in combination with cgspUtilSampleInterval, cgspUtilThreshold, cgspUtilThreshold and cgspLinkUtilThresholdRcvd to generate the ciscoGspLinkRcvdUtilChange notification.
C32 cgspEventSequenceNumber1.3.6.1.4.1.9.9.336.1.1.6Counter32read-onlyEach event or notification is required to provide a sequence number to be used by the NMS to determine when messages from a particular device are missing. This value will included in each SS7 notification issued by this device.

The first occurrence of ciscoGspUPUReceived and ciscoGspUPUTransmitted notifications are sent and the further occurrences of notifications in this interval are suppressed. At the end of this interval, a notification is sent with total number of UPU MSUs transmitted or received during this interval.

FAQ

How can CISCO-ITP-GSP-MIB help spot an overloaded SS7 signaling point on a Cisco ITP?
It exposes utilization sampling and threshold objects (cgspUtilSampleInterval, cgspUtilThreshold) for the signaling point, acting like a CPU or link-utilization indicator so a carrier NOC can be alerted when the SS7 signaling function is approaching capacity.

What does this MIB provide for fault detection on Cisco IP Transfer Points?
Its cgspEventSequenceNumber object and the ciscoGspMIBNotifs notification subtree surface fault conditions on the signaling point, letting carriers track SS7 signaling faults as ITP nodes interconnect SS7 networks with an IP core.

RFC description

Cisco IP Transfer Point Gateway Signalling Point MIB for managing SS7 signalling points over IP.

Start monitoring Cisco IP Transfer Point (ITP) SS7 signaling gateway (legacy) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
