Category: Cisco Devices, Hardware and Environment
Description: Handles microcode version tracking and loading for Parallel Side-A processors on Cisco modular platforms.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCO-PSA-MICROCODE-MIB?
CISCO-PSA-MICROCODE-MIB manages microcode bundle versioning and loading for Parallel Side-A (PSA) processors found on certain Cisco modular line cards, such as Engine 2 cards in the GSR (12000 series) router family. It exposes per-module current and previous microcode bundle identifiers, the set of features enabled/disabled by the loaded bundle, and a table of available bundle definitions with their feature sets. It is directly useful for monitoring software-version status of hardware line-card processors — cpmcModulePsaCurrBundleId versus cpmcModulePsaPrevBundleId lets an admin confirm whether a microcode upgrade completed as expected, and cpmcModulePsaFeaturesEnabled/cpmcModulePsaFeaturesDisabled reveal whether a card is running with a reduced feature set after a bundle change, which can explain unexpected forwarding-behavior differences. Notifications are configurable via cpmcNotifEnables, allowing the device to alert on microcode-related events. It is typically deployed on Cisco GSR 12000-series routers carrying PSA-equipped line cards. Engineers can download the CISCO-PSA-MICROCODE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-PSA-MICROCODE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco GSR 12000-series routers with PSA-equipped line cards (e.g., Engine 2)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll cpmcModulePsaTable/cpmcModulePsaEntry for cpmcModulePsaCurrBundleId per line card and cross-reference it against cpmcBundleTable/cpmcBundleEntry (keyed by cpmcBundleId) to confirm the card is running the intended microcode bundle and feature set (cpmcBundleFeatures). A mismatch between cpmcModulePsaCurrBundleId and cpmcModulePsaPrevBundleId after a maintenance window confirms a successful microcode reload, while unexpected entries in cpmcModulePsaFeaturesDisabled would explain a line card silently lacking an expected forwarding feature. cpmcNotifEnables governs whether such bundle-change events generate SNMP notifications.
What Can Be Monitored
- current and previous microcode bundle ID
- enabled and disabled features per module
- available microcode bundle definitions
- microcode-change notification enablement
