What Is CISCO-EIGRP-MIB?

CISCO-EIGRP-MIB provides SNMP management of the Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP), a Cisco proprietary distance-vector routing protocol based on the Diffusing Update Algorithm, across both IPv4 and IPv6 address families. It exposes tables for EIGRP processes, interfaces, neighbor adjacencies, topology/route entries, and traffic statistics, closely mirroring what the router's CLI displays for EIGRP. Its monitoring emphasis is on routing-software health and stability rather than physical hardware: tracking neighbor adjacency counts, topology table size, and traffic statistics reveals route flapping, neighbor loss, or SPF-like recomputation churn that can indicate network instability or misconfiguration. It naturally depends on the base IETF routing MIBs (IF-MIB for interface references, and general SNMPv2 conventions) since EIGRP interfaces and neighbors are tied to underlying network interfaces. The CISCO-EIGRP-MIB MIB is deployed on Cisco routers and multilayer switches running EIGRP in enterprise and service-provider network cores to monitor routing protocol convergence and stability.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll EIGRP neighbor tables to track adjacency uptime and neighbor count per interface, and watch topology/route tables for unexpected growth or churn indicating route flapping. Comparing traffic statistics (e.g., packets sent/received, retransmissions) across polling intervals would reveal an interface experiencing excessive EIGRP update retransmissions, often a sign of link instability or an MTU mismatch. A sudden drop in neighbor count on a core router would be an early warning of an adjacency failure affecting network reachability.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cEigrpHellosSent OID:

Select a Cisco router/multilayer switch running EIGRP as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cEigrpHellosSent into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The total number Hello packets that have been sent to all EIGRP neighbors formed on all interfaces whose IP addresses fall under networks configured for the EIGRP AS. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
