What Is ATM-FORUM-SNMP-M4-MIB?
ATM-FORUM-SNMP-M4-MIB is the SNMP mapping of the ATM Forum's M4 network-element management interface, a vendor-neutral specification for managing ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) switching equipment from the perspective of an individual network element. It exposes network-element identity and versioning (vendor, version, start time), alarm severity reporting, and physical path/transmission-path (TP) tables describing hardware unit and port-level ATM connections, along with adapter identification objects. Its monitoring value spans both software and hardware status: atmfM4NeStartTime reveals device uptime/restart history, atmfM4NeAlarmSeverityIndex and per-path atmfM4PhysPathTpAlarmSeverityIndex surface fault conditions at the network-element and physical-port level, and atmfM4PhysPathTpHwUnitIndex/atmfM4PhysPathTpPortID identify the specific hardware unit and port involved in an alarm. It is built on the ATM Forum's broader M-interface management framework (M1-M5) and is meant to interoperate with other ATM management standards for cross-vendor ATM network monitoring. It is deployed in carrier and enterprise ATM switching networks, typically polled by an ATM-aware NMS to track network-element health and alarm state across ATM equipment from multiple vendors. Operators unfamiliar with the module can browse the ATM-FORUM-SNMP-M4-MIB OID hierarchy to locate the network-element and physical-path tables described above before building custom polling.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ATM-FORUM-SNMP-M4-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples
An operator would check atmfM4NeStartTime to determine how long an ATM network element has been up since its last restart, and poll atmfM4NeAlarmSeverityIndex for the overall device alarm state. Drilling into atmfM4PhysPathTpTable/atmfM4PhysPathTpEntry, keyed by atmfM4PhysPathTpHwUnitIndex and atmfM4PhysPathTpPortID, lets the operator pinpoint exactly which hardware unit and port raised an alarm via atmfM4PhysPathTpAlarmSeverityIndex, while atmfM4TcAdapterTable/atmfM4TcAdapterEntry helps identify the specific transmission convergence adapter involved.
