Category: MPLS and Traffic Engineering, Pseudowire

Description: Defines managed objects for managing pseudowire (PW) operation over MPLS packet-switched networks.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring PW-MPLS-STD-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is PW-MPLS-STD-MIB?

PW-MPLS-STD-MIB is the IETF standards-track MIB (RFC-based, PWE3 working group) that complements the base PW-STD-MIB by defining managed objects specifically for pseudowire operation over MPLS packet-switched networks. It exposes configuration and status data binding each pseudowire to its MPLS transport characteristics: MPLS encapsulation type, EXP-bits handling mode, TTL, and the local/peer LDP identifiers used to signal the pseudowire's label bindings, plus an outbound-specific table for egress-direction parameters. Its monitoring value is service/software operational status -- confirming a given pseudowire is correctly bound to its MPLS label switched path and LDP session, which is essential for detecting a down or misconfigured Layer 2 VPN circuit. As stated in its own description, it explicitly depends on and complements the PW-STD-MIB (and implicitly on MPLS-LDP-related MIBs) for the base pseudowire object model. It is deployed on MPLS provider-edge routers delivering pseudowire (Layer 2 VPN, e.g. VPWS) services to enterprise customers, as defined in the PW-MPLS-STD-MIB RFC.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PW-MPLS-STD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • MPLS provider-edge routers delivering pseudowire/L2VPN services

Monitoring Examples

A provider-edge router administrator would poll pwMplsTable entries (pwMplsEntry keyed the same as the base pwTable) to check pwMplsLocalLdpID and pwMplsPeerLdpID, confirming the correct LDP session pairing for a customer's pseudowire, and would inspect pwMplsTtl and pwMplsExpBitsMode/pwMplsExpBits to verify QoS marking and TTL behavior match the service design. The pwMplsOutboundTable (pwMplsOutboundEntry) would be checked separately when egress-direction MPLS parameters differ from the main binding, such as in asymmetric pseudowire configurations. A pseudowire showing an unexpected pwMplsMplsType or a mismatched LDP identifier would point to a signaling misconfiguration preventing the L2VPN circuit from coming up.

What Can Be Monitored

  • pseudowire-to-MPLS binding
  • local/peer LDP identifiers
  • MPLS EXP bits and TTL handling
  • outbound MPLS parameters
  • pseudowire MPLS encapsulation type
