Category: Network Interfaces, Pseudowire

Description: Defines managed objects for provisioning and monitoring Ethernet pseudowire (PW) services over packet-switched networks.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring PW-ENET-STD-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is PW-ENET-STD-MIB?

PW-ENET-STD-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB (published via the IETF Trust) that defines a management model for Ethernet point-to-point pseudowire (PW) services carried over a Packet Switched Network, part of the broader Pseudowire Emulation Edge-to-Edge (PWE3) framework. It exposes configuration objects for provisioning Ethernet pseudowires, including VLAN mode, port and pseudowire interface bindings, row status for provisioning, and per-pseudowire statistics. Its monitoring value is in service provisioning and operational status: confirming that a pseudowire's VLAN mapping and interface bindings are active and correctly configured, and tracking traffic statistics per pseudowire instance to detect misconfiguration or service-affecting faults. It depends on the broader PW-STD-MIB / PW-TC-STD-MIB framework for generic pseudowire objects and on IF-MIB for interface indexing. It is deployed by carriers offering Ethernet-over-MPLS or Ethernet-over-PSN pseudowire services (Carrier Ethernet / metro networks). Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the PW-ENET-STD-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PW-ENET-STD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • MPLS/PSN edge router or switch providing pseudowire services

Monitoring Examples

An operator can walk pwEnetTable/pwEnetEntry, checking pwEnetPwVlan, pwEnetVlanMode, and pwEnetPortVlan to confirm a pseudowire's VLAN tagging mode matches provisioning intent, and pwEnetRowStatus to verify the entry is active. Cross-referencing pwEnetPortIfIndex and pwEnetPwIfIndex against the underlying interface confirms the correct physical port is bound to the emulated Ethernet service. The pwEnetStatsTable would be polled for packet counters on a specific pseudowire to detect a service instance that has stopped passing traffic despite showing an active row status.

What Can Be Monitored

  • pseudowire VLAN tagging mode
  • port-to-pseudowire interface binding
  • pseudowire row/provisioning status
  • pseudowire traffic statistics

RFC description

Standard MIB for Pseudowire Ethernet (PW-ENET); defined in RFC 4719, manages Ethernet-based pseudowire configuration, status, and performance over MPLS or IP networks.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, MPLS/PSN edge router or switch (Ethernet pseudowire, RFC 5603) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
