What Is NATV2-MIB?

NATV2-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards-track MIB for managing and monitoring Network Address Translation (NAT) functionality, commonly used on carrier-grade NAT (CGN) gateways, routers, and firewalls that translate between internal and external address realms. It exposes subscriber-level mapping data — internal address realm, prefix, and prefix length — plus counters for active and cumulative address and port map entries, translations, and map creations, alongside device- and instance-level objects and notifications. It is squarely a performance/resource-monitoring MIB: administrators use it to track NAT table/session load, detect when a subscriber's port or address pool is close to exhaustion, and monitor translation throughput as an indicator of NAT engine health. It depends on the NAT-TC module for its shared NATProtocolType textual convention. It is typically deployed by ISPs and enterprises running CGN or large-scale NAT gateways, where per-subscriber NAT capacity monitoring is essential to avoid service degradation as address pools fill up. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the NATV2-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll natv2SubscriberTable/natv2SubscriberEntry keyed by natv2SubscriberIndex to inspect a subscriber's natv2SubscriberInternalRealm and internal prefix, then check natv2SubscriberAddressMapEntries and natv2SubscriberPortMapEntries to see current active mapping counts against configured limits. A subscriber whose natv2SubscriberPortMapEntries is pegged near its maximum, combined with a spike in natv2SubscriberPortMapCreations, indicates that subscriber is exhausting its port allocation and may start experiencing failed outbound connections; natv2MIBNotifications would typically fire a trap in that scenario.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using natv2SubscriberTranslations OID:

Select a device implementing NATV2-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type natv2SubscriberTranslations into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The cumulative number of translated packets received from or sent to this subscriber. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
