What Is HPR-MIB?

HPR-MIB is an IETF/vendor-neutral standards MIB for managing IBM's High Performance Routing (HPR), an enhancement to APPN (Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking) that provides nondisruptive path-switching and automatic network routing in SNA-based networks. It exposes node-level identity and capability data, path-switch support indicators, and detailed Automatic Network Routing (ANR) label/routing table entries, along with traffic counters. Its monitoring value centers on software/protocol status: confirming a node's HPR capabilities (hprOperatorPathSwitchSupport), tracking ANR routing table entries and their state/state-time, and counting packets received per ANR route to detect stalled or misrouted HPR traffic. It is closely related to and typically deployed alongside HPR-IP-MIB, which handles the IP-transport-specific extensions to the same HPR framework. It is deployed in legacy IBM SNA/APPN network environments, typically on mainframe-connected routers and gateways providing HPR-based session resiliency. Engineers can download the HPR-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll hprAnrRoutingTable (hprAnrRoutingEntry) to inspect hprAnrLabel, hprAnrType, hprAnrOutTgDest, and hprAnrOutTgNum for each ANR route, cross-referencing hprAnrPacketsReceived to confirm traffic is actually flowing over the expected route. Checking hprAnrCounterState and hprAnrCounterStateTime alongside hprAnrsAssigned helps determine whether a route's counters have gone stale, which combined with hprNodeCpName identifying the reporting node, would suggest a path-switch event occurred that operators should investigate via hprOperatorPathSwitchSupport.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hprAnrsAssigned OID:

Select an IBM SNA/APPN network node/router with HPR capability as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hprAnrsAssigned into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The count of ANR labels assigned by this node since it was last re-initialized. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in ANR labels), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
