Category: Standard: IEEE 802, Technology: Logging/Syslog

Description: Provides logging objects for IEEE 802.5 Token Ring network events and error conditions.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DOT5-LOG-MIB?

DOT5-LOG-MIB provides logging objects for IEEE 802.5 Token Ring network events and error conditions, a legacy LAN technology that used a token-passing ring topology rather than Ethernet's shared/switched medium. Based on its object set it exposes Token Ring station/port inventory and ring-level status, port counts, which ports are enabled/active, the number of attached stations, and the identity of the active monitor station that manages token circulation on the ring. For monitoring it is a hardware/topology health MIB: tRingMgmtRingState and tRingMgmtActiveMonitor reveal whether the ring is operating normally and which station currently holds the active-monitor role (a critical Token Ring function whose loss or handoff can signal a ring fault), while tRingMgmtStnPortsOn/tRingMgmtRingPortsOn show how many ports are actually active versus merely enabled. It follows the general IEEE 802.5-derived MIB conventions (dot5Rev1) and would be used alongside base Token Ring interface MIBs covering per-station statistics. It would have been deployed on legacy Token Ring hubs/MAUs in enterprise networks, a technology now largely retired in favor of switched Ethernet, though administrators researching the DOT5-LOG-MIB RFC and related IEEE 802.5 definitions may still reference it when supporting legacy equipment.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DOT5-LOG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron Systems Token Ring hub/MAU (ring management/logging) — Identified as Cabletron Systems (not a vendor-neutral IETF standard) via its CTRON-MIB-NAMES import, which is Cabletron's proprietary enterprise MIB-naming module — the existing description's 'vendor-neutral' framing understated the vendor tie.

Monitoring Examples

Polling tRingMgmtRingState reveals whether a given ring segment is up, and tRingMgmtActiveMonitor identifies which station currently holds active-monitor duties; an unexpected change here, or a ring reporting no active monitor, indicates a ring recovery event or fault. Comparing tRingMgmtStnPortsEnable against tRingMgmtStnPortsOn shows whether all enabled station ports are actually active, exposing a port that failed to insert into the ring. tRingMgmtStations gives the current station count, letting an admin detect an unexpected drop in attached devices.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ring operational state
  • active monitor station identity
  • station/port count (enabled vs. active)
  • ring speed
