Category: Standard: IEEE 802
Description: Manages physical layer attributes and hardware configuration for IEEE 802.5 Token Ring interfaces.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is DOT5-PHYS-MIB?
This is a vendor-neutral, standards-based IETF MIB module that manages physical layer attributes and hardware configuration for IEEE 802.5 Token Ring network interfaces, an older LAN technology largely superseded by Ethernet. It exposes device-level hardware counts and port state data for ring station attachments rather than modern performance counters. It is directly a hardware status monitoring MIB: it reports the count of rings and ports on the device, how many ports are enabled versus actually on/operational, and tracks port association changes, which reveal ring station attach/detach events and hardware port health. It is a companion/extension to the base Token Ring MIB (dot5) defined for the same technology. It would have been deployed on legacy Token Ring-capable network devices such as ring hubs, MAUs, or bridges in older enterprise LAN environments. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the DOT5-PHYS-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DOT5-PHYS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cabletron Systems Token Ring hub/MAU (physical-layer port config) — Identified as Cabletron Systems (not a vendor-neutral IETF standard) via its CTRON-MIB-NAMES import, which is Cabletron's proprietary enterprise MIB-naming module — the existing description's 'vendor-neutral' framing understated the vendor tie.
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll dot5PhysMgmtDeviceRingCount and dot5PhysMgmtDevicePortCount alongside dot5PhysMgmtDevicePortsEnable and dot5PhysMgmtDevicePortsOn to confirm how many physical ring ports are configured versus actually active, and monitor dot5PhysMgmtDevicePortAssociationChanges to detect stations unexpectedly joining or leaving a ring, which would indicate a wiring fault or device failure on that ring segment.
What Can Be Monitored
- ring count per device
- port count per device
- enabled vs. operational port counts
- station port counts
- port association change events
