Description: MIB for DECnet Phase IV protocol management, covering routing, system, and node counters on Digital Equipment Corporation networking devices

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DECnet-iv?

DECnet-iv is a MIB for managing DECnet Phase IV, the proprietary networking protocol historically used on Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC/Compaq/HP) VAX and Alpha systems and DECnet-capable routers. It exposes DECnet-specific routing, node, and system-level counters covering node reachability, routing circuit state, and protocol traffic volumes. It is used to gauge the operational health of DECnet nodes and routing circuits -- traffic and routing-update counters, plus node/area up-down indications, serve as proxies for device and link status even though the module has no classic hardware sensors like temperature or fans. It is rooted directly in the standard SNMPv2/SMI OID tree (mgmt, mib-2, experimental, private, enterprises) and predates modern IETF interface/host MIBs, making it largely self-contained rather than layered on other standard MIBs. It is typically found in legacy DEC/Compaq VMS or DECnet router environments still running Phase IV networking, now mostly of historical or legacy-support interest. Engineers can download the DECnet-iv file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DECnet-iv. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • DEC/Compaq/HP VAX or Alpha system running DECnet Phase IV
  • DECnet-capable router

Monitoring Examples

The sample objects supplied (mgmt, mib-2, directory, experimental, private, enterprises) are the standard top-level SMI OID-tree nodes this MIB is rooted under, not DECnet-specific runtime variables, so no concrete table or counter names are available to ground a monitoring scenario. In practice a DECnet-iv-capable agent exposes per-circuit and per-node routing/traffic counters under its private enterprise branch, which an administrator would poll to detect circuit-down events or abnormal packet-loss trends on a DECnet Phase IV network.

What Can Be Monitored

  • DECnet routing circuit status
  • node reachability / up-down state
  • protocol traffic counters
  • system-level DECnet statistics
