What Is CISCO-WDS-INFO-MIB?

CISCO-WDS-INFO-MIB provides information about Cisco Wireless Domain Services (WDS), a control mechanism in Cisco's wireless LAN infrastructure (particularly the Wireless LAN Services Module, WLSM) that manages Layer 3 roaming for wireless clients moving between access points on different subnets. It exposes topology and membership data for the WLAN infrastructure: a MAC-authentication cache of client devices, and a table of access points registered with the WDS, including each AP's address, name, state, and how long it has been known to the WDS. From a monitoring standpoint it lets an administrator confirm WDS membership health, verifying which access points are currently registered and in what operational state, and tracking AP lifetime to spot APs that have dropped off and re-registered (a sign of connectivity flapping), as well as monitoring cache aging for client authentication entries. It is used alongside Cisco's Lightweight/Central-Controller wireless architecture and depends on the broader Cisco wireless infrastructure MIB set for AP and controller identification. It is deployed on Cisco wireless LAN controllers/WLSM modules acting as the WDS in enterprise wireless deployments with roaming clients. Engineers can download the CISCO-WDS-INFO-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

Polling cwdsiApTable/cwdsiApEntry, keyed by cwdsiApMacAddr, reveals each registered access point's cwdsiApName, cwdsiApAddr, and cwdsiApState; an AP that unexpectedly transitions out of a registered state, or whose cwdsiApLifeTime resets frequently, points to a flapping WDS registration or L3 connectivity problem. The cwdsiMacAuthCacheTable, keyed by cwdsiMacAuthCacheMacAddr, tracks client MAC authentication cache entries and their cwdsiMacAuthCacheAge, useful for auditing how long a roaming client's authentication has been cached. ciscoWdsInfoMIBNotifs would raise a trap when AP membership changes occur.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using cwdsiAaaAuthAttemptCount OID:

Select a Cisco Wireless LAN Controller as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type cwdsiAaaAuthAttemptCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. This object specifies the number of AAA authentication attempts (such as LEAP) made by WDS to authenticate Access Points and Mobile Nodes. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
