What Is CISCO-WAN-FR-PORT-MIB?
CISCO-WAN-FR-PORT-MIB is a Cisco enterprise MIB for configuring and monitoring Frame Relay ports on WAN service modules within Cisco MGX multiservice switching platforms, covering logical frame relay ports carried over T1/E1 physical lines. It exposes port configuration groups (line number, DS0 channel bitmap, speed, admin type), port state groups reflecting current operational status, and port counter groups for statistics on frame relay traffic. For monitoring, it lets an administrator confirm a frame relay port's administrative and operational state, check configured line speed and DS0 channelization, and pull traffic statistics to spot congestion or errors on the WAN link, which is core to diagnosing service-affecting problems on carrier frame relay circuits. It builds on standard T1/E1 physical-layer MIBs for the underlying line, since a frame relay port is logically layered on a DS0/T1/E1 channel. It is deployed on Cisco MGX WAN switching platforms used by carriers and enterprises to deliver Frame Relay services over T1/E1 access lines, and network engineers can download the CISCO-WAN-FR-PORT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser for these platforms.

Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll portAdmin and the corresponding operational state from frPortStateGrp for entries in frPortCnfPortGrpTable to confirm a frame relay port is administratively up and passing traffic, cross-checking portDs0ConfigBitMap and portSpeed to verify the correct DS0 channels and line speed are provisioned. If portRowStatus shows a port as active but frPortCntPortGrp statistics show rising errors, that points to a physical-layer or channelization problem on the underlying T1/E1 line rather than a configuration issue.

SVC : Switched Virtual Circuits. DE : Discard Eligibility A user-bit set indicating that a frame may be discarded in preference to other frames if congestion occurs, to maintain the committed quality of service within the network. Since, Frame Relay Port table is used for creating entries in ifTable, it sounds odd to specify ifIndex value for this object, even before creating the ifTable entries!. The reason(s) for this is as follows: - There are tables in other frame relay mibs, which are indexed by auxiliary objects(objects which are both specified in the INDEX clause and columnar objects of the same row) whose value is supposed to be same as 'portNum'. These MIBs have been used earlier by NMS Applications for the other product lines(MGX8250, MGX8220 etc). - The same frame relay tables in used in other products has been decided to use in new products(for example MGX8850 with FRSM-12 Service Module). It is a requirement that ifTable must be supported in New Service Modules. If we use ifIndex value of the frame relay port (after creation) in other tables(FR Port Stats, FR R Resource Partition or FR Connection etc), and if ifIndex value is different than 'portNum', then it will break the NMS applications which have been using this MIB with the assumptions that 'portNum' and INDEXes(For example: frResPartPortNum, lmiCnfPortNum, etc) are same. To avoid this confusion, it is required that 'portNum' value must be same as 'ifIndex' of the frame relay port. |
