What Is CISCO-CABLE-SPECTRUM-MIB?

CISCO-CABLE-SPECTRUM-MIB supports Spectrum Management on DOCSIS-compliant Cisco Cable Modem Termination Systems (CMTS), a feature that senses upstream/downstream RF plant impairments and can automatically mitigate them. It exposes data on cable modem 'flapping' (state changes/disconnects), including a flap list with per-modem hit and miss counts, plus objects governing spectrum analysis behavior. Its primary use is fault and performance monitoring of the RF plant: by tracking flap events keyed by modem MAC address and upstream/downstream interface, operators can identify unstable cable modems or plant segments experiencing noise, signal ingress, or other impairments before they cause widespread outages. It is specific to DOCSIS cable technology and works alongside the standard DOCS-IF-MIB, which provides the underlying physical-layer signal quality data this module's flap detection complements. It is deployed on Cisco CMTS head-end equipment in cable broadband access networks, where operators can download the CISCO-CABLE-SPECTRUM-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser for flap monitoring.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-CABLE-SPECTRUM-MIB. Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll ccsFlapTable, keyed by ccsFlapMacAddr, ccsFlapUpstreamIfIndex, and ccsFlapDownstreamIfIndex, watching ccsFlapHits versus ccsFlapMisses and ccsFlapInsertionTime to spot modems disconnecting and reconnecting repeatedly. A high ccsFlapHits count for modems sharing the same upstream interface, combined with a growing ccsFlapListCurrentSize approaching ccsFlapListMaxSize, would point to an RF plant impairment such as ingress noise on that upstream segment rather than an individual faulty modem.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using ccsFlapListCurrentSize OID:

Select a Cisco CMTS (Cable Modem Termination System) platform as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type ccsFlapListCurrentSize into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The total number of flapped modem entries (ccsCmFlapEntry) that reported in the ccsCmFlapTable. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline (in modems), since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
