Organization: Broadband Access Systems, Inc.

Last Updated: 1998-11-06

Category: DOCSIS and Cable, Network Interfaces

Description: Manages network interface configuration and statistics specific to the BAS broadband access platform.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BAS-IF-MIB?

BAS-IF-MIB extends standard interface management with proprietary objects for Broadband Access Systems' broadband access platform hardware, identifying interfaces by chassis, slot, and logical port. It exposes interface classification, proxy ARP behavior, DHCP subnet associations for cable modems and hosts, ARP aging controls, and security filtering settings on each interface. Rather than raw hardware sensors, its monitoring value lies in confirming interface configuration state and access-control posture across a modular chassis, which helps detect misconfigured or disabled security filters and ARP settings. It is a vendor extension layered on top of the standard IETF Interfaces MIB (ifTable), reusing ifIndex-style addressing. It is deployed by broadband/cable operators managing multi-slot BAS chassis where interfaces must be tracked down to the chassis/slot/port level. Engineers can download the BAS-IF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BAS-IF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • BAS (Broadband Access Systems) chassis-based broadband access platform

Monitoring Examples

An operator would query basIfTable/basIfEntry keyed by basIfChassis, basIfSlot, basIfInterface, and basIfLPort to locate a specific line-card interface and check its basIfClass and basIfSecurityFilter settings for correct policy application. Comparing basIfDhcpCmSubnet and basIfDhcpHostSubnet against expected provisioning plans can reveal a slot serving the wrong subnet, and an unexpectedly disabled basIfArpAgingDisable flag could explain stale ARP entries on that port.

What Can Be Monitored

  • interface chassis/slot/port mapping
  • interface class
  • DHCP subnet assignment
  • ARP aging state
  • security filter status
  • proxy ARP configuration
