Category: ATM

Description: Manages dual PHY redundancy configuration for ATM physical interfaces on Cisco devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CISCO-ATM-DUAL-PHY-MIB?

This is a Cisco enterprise MIB for managing dual-PHY redundant ATM physical interfaces, used on Cisco routers/switches that support redundant physical-layer ATM transport (e.g. SONET/SDH-based ATM line cards). It exposes a statistics table per physical interface covering line/section/path error counters (BIP-8, FEB errors), signal-loss and far-end-receive-failure indicators, HCS error counts, and which PHY is currently active. Its core purpose is hardware health monitoring: it lets an operator detect physical-layer degradation via rising bit-error counters, loss-of-signal conditions, and confirm which of the redundant PHYs is actively carrying traffic, essential for a functioning failover setup. As an ATM PHY extension, it complements the standard ATM-MIB and Cisco's broader interface MIBs rather than replacing them. It is typically deployed on Cisco ATM edge/aggregation platforms with SONET/SDH-protected dual PHY line cards in carrier or enterprise WAN environments. Engineers can download the CISCO-ATM-DUAL-PHY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCO-ATM-DUAL-PHY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cisco router/switch with redundant ATM PHY line cards

Monitoring Examples

An engineer would poll cadpStatTable/cadpStatEntry for a given interface and watch cadpStatSectionBIP8Errors, cadpStatLineBIP824Errors, and cadpStatPathBIP8Errors for rising error counts indicative of physical-layer degradation. cadpStatLossOfSignal and cadpStatFarEndReceiveFailure flag hard failures, while cadpStatActive shows which of the two redundant PHYs is currently in service. A jump in cadpStatUncorrectableHCSErrors alongside a PHY switchover in cadpStatActive would indicate the standby PHY had to take over due to line degradation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • active PHY selection
  • loss of signal
  • far-end receive failure
  • section/line/path BIP-8 error counts
  • correctable/uncorrectable HCS errors
