What Is RIVERSTONE-ATM-MIB?

RIVERSTONE-ATM-MIB is a Riverstone Networks enterprise MIB extending IETF standard ATM MIBs, focused specifically on the ATM forwarding database (FDB) that maps learned MAC addresses to the ATM permanent virtual circuit (PVC) they were seen on. It exposes objects for ATM interface configuration, per-VC parameters, and MAC-to-PVC forwarding/learning data, alongside conformance/compliance groups for the module itself. Its monitoring role is centered on layer-2/ATM forwarding software status: rsAtmFdbMacsLearned tracks how many MAC addresses the switch has learned over ATM PVCs, and rsAtmFdbTable entries (keyed by VPI/VCI) let an administrator confirm which end stations are reachable over which virtual circuit, useful for diagnosing bridging/forwarding problems on ATM-based Riverstone equipment. It is explicitly an enterprise extension to IETF standard ATM MIBs, adding Riverstone-specific FDB mapping on top of the standard ATM interface/VC model rather than replacing it. It would be deployed on Riverstone Networks RS-series switch/routers used in ATM-based enterprise or carrier backbone networks. Engineers can download the RIVERSTONE-ATM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RIVERSTONE-ATM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Riverstone Networks RS-series ATM switch/routers

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll rsAtmFdbTable/rsAtmFdbEntry to see learned MAC addresses along with their rsAtmFdbVpi and rsAtmFdbVci values, and watch rsAtmFdbMacsLearned as a gauge of forwarding-table size; an unexpectedly low or dropping MAC-learned count combined with missing expected entries for a known end station would indicate an ATM PVC or bridging fault on that Riverstone platform.

What Can Be Monitored

  • learned MAC addresses over ATM PVCs
  • MAC-to-VPI/VCI forwarding table entries
  • ATM interface/VC configuration

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rsAtmFdbMacsLearned OID:

Select a Riverstone Networks RS-series ATM switch/router (MAC-to-PVC forwarding database) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rsAtmFdbMacsLearned into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of MAC addresses learned on ATM line cards system. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.

RFC description

Maps MAC addresses learned on ATM line cards to their corresponding Virtual Path/Channel Identifiers (VPI/VCI).
