What Is ADSL-LINE-EXT-MIB?

ADSL-LINE-EXT-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards-track MIB published as RFC 3440, defining supplemental managed objects that extend the earlier ADSL-LINE-MIB (RFC 2662). It exposes additional configuration and status objects for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line interfaces not covered by the base MIB, generally covering line-rate, framing/annex mode, and alarm/threshold extensions. As a line-interface extension MIB it is used to monitor the operational and fault status of ADSL physical interfaces — link state, rate adaptation, and error/alarm conditions — rather than general chassis hardware health. It has an explicit, acknowledged dependency on ADSL-LINE-MIB (RFC 2662), which it supplements rather than replaces. It is deployed on any standards-compliant DSL access equipment (DSLAMs, ADSL modems/routers) from any vendor that implements the IETF ADSL MIB suite, and consulting the ADSL-LINE-EXT-MIB OID list alongside the base ADSL-LINE-MIB gives a fuller register of both rate/alarm extension objects and the original channel objects.

Monitoring Examples

An operator managing a DSLAM would poll this extension MIB's rate and alarm-configuration objects alongside the base ADSL-LINE-MIB's channel tables to get a fuller picture of an individual subscriber's line performance. Because no sample objects were available for this module, a typical use is cross-referencing extension objects with the base MIB's line-status counters to detect a line that has re-trained repeatedly or fallen back to a lower sync rate. Such behavior typically indicates copper-pair noise, distance, or cross-talk issues on the subscriber loop.
