Description: Manages Xylan OmniSwitch soft permanent virtual circuit setup, routing parameters, and status.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is XYLAN-SOFT-PVC-MIB?

XYLAN-SOFT-PVC-MIB is a Xylan (later Alcatel OmniSwitch) private MIB for managing ATM soft permanent virtual circuits (soft PVCs), covering call setup, routing, and failure conditions on OmniSwitch ATM switching modules. It exposes fault- and status-oriented data including counts of soft PVC call failures, currently failing soft PVCC/PVPC circuits with their slot/port/VPI/VCI identifiers, and configurable trap notification intervals. This is fundamentally a fault-monitoring MIB: it is used to detect software/network-level failures in ATM virtual circuit establishment rather than physical hardware sensors, and its trap objects (atmxSoftPvcCallFailuresTrapEnable) are designed to alert operators in near real time when soft PVCs fail to connect. It builds on the standard ATM Forum/IETF ATM MIB conventions for PVC addressing (VPI/VCI, slot/port indexing) though it is Xylan-specific in its object naming. It is deployed on Xylan/Alcatel OmniSwitch ATM switches in carrier or enterprise ATM backbone networks where soft PVC reliability is critical. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the XYLAN-SOFT-PVC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in XYLAN-SOFT-PVC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Xylan/Alcatel OmniSwitch ATM switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator monitoring atmxSoftPvcCurrentlyFailingSoftPVccs and atmxSoftPvcCurrentlyFailingSoftPVpcs can see a rising count indicating circuits are failing to establish. Walking atmxCurrentlyFailingSoftPVccTable/atmxCurrentlyFailingSoftPVccEntry yields the exact atmxCurrentlyFailingSoftPVccSlotIndex, PortIndex, Vpi, and Vci of each failing circuit, letting an operator pinpoint which physical port and virtual circuit identifier is affected. Enabling atmxSoftPvcCallFailuresTrapEnable ensures the switch proactively notifies the NMS via atmxSoftPvcMIBTraps when new call failures occur, rather than requiring constant polling.

What Can Be Monitored

  • soft PVC call failure count
  • currently failing soft PVCC/PVPC circuits
  • failing circuit slot/port/VPI/VCI
  • call failure trap notification interval
