Category: Xylan OmniSwitch

Description: Monitors Xylan OmniSwitch Packet over SONET OC-3 interface parameters and transmission statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is XYLAN-POS3-MIB?

XYLAN-POS3-MIB is a vendor-specific module from Xylan, later acquired by Alcatel, used on OmniSwitch platforms to manage Packet over SONET (POS) interfaces running at OC-3 (155 Mbps) rates. It is expected to expose interface-level configuration and statistics for POS OC-3 links, such as framing mode, alarm/defect indicators, and transmission counters layered on top of the standard SONET/PPP interface stack. As a monitoring tool it would primarily support hardware/link-status visibility, letting an operator see whether a POS OC-3 interface is up, whether it is reporting SONET-layer alarms or errors, and how much traffic is passing over it. It builds on standard SONET-MIB and IF-MIB conventions for interface indexing and status rather than defining an entirely independent addressing scheme. It would be deployed on legacy Xylan/Alcatel OmniSwitch chassis providing SONET/POS WAN uplinks in carrier or enterprise backbone networks. Engineers can download the XYLAN-POS3-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in XYLAN-POS3-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Xylan/Alcatel OmniSwitch
  • SONET/POS OC-3 WAN interface card

Monitoring Examples

No sample object names were provided for this MIB, so specific object polling cannot be described with confidence; in general, an operator would expect to poll per-interface SONET/POS OC-3 status and error counters, analogous to standard SONET-MIB line/section tables, to detect link-down conditions or rising bit-error rates on the OC-3 circuit.

What Can Be Monitored

  • POS OC-3 interface status
  • SONET alarm/defect indicators
  • interface transmission statistics
