Category: Xylan OmniSwitch
Description: Monitors Xylan OmniSwitch SONET section, line, and path layer performance monitoring counters.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is XYLAN-SONET-MIB?
This Xylan Corporation enterprise MIB for OmniSwitch SONET interface cards models performance-monitoring counters at the SONET section, line, and path layers as defined by telecom SONET standards. It exposes granular error and performance counters — such as coding violations, errored seconds, severely errored seconds, and loss-of-signal/frame events — segmented by SONET layer. This is fundamentally a hardware health and link-quality monitoring MIB: it lets an operator detect degrading optical signal quality, framing errors, or physical-layer faults on a SONET interface before they cause an outage. It parallels and extends the standard IETF SONET-MIB (RFC 2558) framework with Xylan-specific current/interval counter tables. It is used in service-provider or enterprise WAN environments where OmniSwitch equipment terminates SONET optical transport circuits. Engineers can download the XYLAN-SONET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in XYLAN-SONET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Xylan OmniSwitch SONET interface card
Monitoring Examples
No sample objects were available in this MIB source. In general, an administrator would poll the SONET section/line/path current and interval performance counters, such as errored seconds and severely errored seconds, per interface. A rising count of these counters on a given SONET path would indicate a degrading optical link or a failing transceiver.
What Can Be Monitored
- SONET section-layer error counters
- SONET line-layer performance counters
- SONET path-layer performance counters
- signal/framing error events
