What Is XYLAN-BASE-MIB?
XYLAN-BASE-MIB is the foundational enterprise MIB for Xylan Corporation's OmniSwitch line of Ethernet/ATM switches (Xylan was later acquired by Alcatel), establishing the root OID subtree under which all other Xylan/OmniSwitch MIB modules register their objects. As a base module it does not itself expose interface, environment, or performance counters; instead it supplies the common object identifiers and shared definitions that downstream OmniSwitch MIBs use to organize configuration, fault/trap, and status data. It has no monitorable runtime objects of its own, so it plays no direct role in reporting uptime, temperature, CPU/memory, power/fan health, or software version — those are surfaced by the specific OmniSwitch MIB modules built on top of it. Its main significance is structural: every Xylan-specific MIB depends on this OID tree being registered correctly. It would typically be loaded into an SNMP manager or MIB compiler alongside other OmniSwitch MIBs when managing Xylan/OmniSwitch chassis switches in enterprise or carrier networks, and anyone opening XYLAN-BASE-MIB in a MIB Browser will find only these shared OID definitions rather than pollable data.
