Description: Defines managed objects for the UDP-Lite transport protocol, which supports partial checksum coverage for error-prone networks.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring UDPLITE-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is UDPLITE-MIB?

UDPLITE-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB (RFC 5097) defining managed objects for the UDP-Lite transport protocol, a variant of UDP that allows partial checksum coverage so that error-prone links (such as wireless) can still deliver partially-corrupted payloads to applications like VoIP or video that tolerate some data loss. It exposes protocol-level statistics such as datagrams received/sent, partial-checksum-coverage counts, no-port and checksum-error counts, plus an endpoint table listing local address/port bindings in use. This is a software/protocol-status monitoring MIB rather than hardware monitoring, useful for confirming a host's UDP-Lite stack is processing traffic correctly and for spotting rising error or bad-checksum counts that indicate link or implementation problems. It parallels and is analogous in structure to the standard UDP-MIB (RFC 4113), reusing common textual conventions from the IETF SNMPv2 framework. It is typically deployed on hosts or network devices implementing UDP-Lite for delay-sensitive multimedia transport over lossy access networks. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the UDPLITE-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in UDPLITE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • any host or network device implementing the UDP-Lite transport protocol

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll udpliteInDatagrams and udpliteOutDatagrams to baseline traffic volume, then watch udpliteInErrors and udpliteInBadChecksum for signs of a misbehaving sender or corrupted transport. udpliteInPartialCov and udpliteOutPartialCov show how much traffic is actually using partial checksum coverage versus full coverage. Walking udpliteEndpointTable (via udpliteEndpointEntry, keyed by udpliteEndpointLocalAddressType/udpliteEndpointLocalAddress/udpliteEndpointLocalPort) reveals which local sockets are currently bound, useful for confirming an expected UDP-Lite service is listening.

What Can Be Monitored

  • UDP-Lite datagrams received/sent
  • partial checksum coverage datagram counts
  • no-port errors
  • bad checksum errors
  • active UDP-Lite endpoint bindings (address/port)

RFC description

Manages UDP-Lite protocol implementation with statistics on datagrams, partial coverage, and port activity.
