Category: SONET and SDH

Description: Manages RAD Data Communications SONET/SDH interface configuration, overhead parameters, and performance statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RAD-SONET-MIB?

This is a RAD Data Communications proprietary MIB that manages SONET/SDH interface configuration and reports detailed performance and defect statistics for RAD transport equipment. Its data spans SONET medium/section/line configuration and current/history performance counters, plus explicit defect indicators for common SONET fault conditions. It is used heavily to monitor the hardware/line status of a SONET interface — objects like prtSonetCurrentLOS, prtSonetCurrentLOF, prtSonetCurrentLineAIS, prtSonetCurrentLineFERF, and the BIP error counters (prtSonetCurrentSectionBIP/prtSonetCurrentLineBIP) let an operator detect loss of signal, loss of frame, alarm-indication signal, far-end failures, or bit-error-rate degradation on the fiber link in near real time. It extends the standard SONET-MIB (RFC 3592/2558) with RAD-specific medium and performance-history objects, so it depends on that IETF standard for its base interface model. It is deployed on RAD Data Communications SONET/SDH transport and access equipment used by carriers and enterprises to terminate or groom SONET/SDH circuits. Engineers can download the RAD-SONET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RAD-SONET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • RAD Data Communications SONET/SDH transport device

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls prtSonetMediumTable/prtSonetMediumEntry to check prtSonetMediumValidIntervals and then examines prtSonetSectionLineCurrentTable/prtSectionLineCurrentEntry for prtSonetCurrentLOS, prtSonetCurrentLOF, prtSonetCurrentLineAIS, and prtSonetCurrentLineFERF to detect an active signal or frame-loss condition on the SONET line. Rising prtSonetCurrentSectionBIP/prtSonetCurrentLineBIP error counts alongside prtSonetPerfHistory data would indicate a degrading fiber or optics problem well before a hard failure occurs.

What Can Be Monitored

  • loss of signal (LOS)
  • loss of frame (LOF)
  • line alarm indication signal (AIS)
  • far-end receive failure (FERF)
  • section/line BIP error counts
  • SONET performance history

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using virtualIfCurrentRxFrames OID:

Select an RAD Data Communications SONET/SDH transport device as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type virtualIfCurrentRxFrames into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This counter is associated with the number of frames received from STS-3/STM-1 by a Virtual Interface in the current 15-minute interval. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
