Description: Huawei PIM standard MIB for managing PIM-SM and PIM-DM multicast routing protocol instances and interface parameters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is HUAWEI-PIM-STD-MIB?

HUAWEI-PIM-STD-MIB is a Huawei implementation of a standards-aligned MIB for managing Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM-SM/PIM-DM) routing on Huawei routers, per its description as the MIB module for management of PIM routers. It exposes multicast routing state including (*,G) and (S,G) multicast route/interface entries, PIM timers such as keepalive period and register-suppression time, and assert-mechanism data recording the last PIM assert winner interface and group address on an interface. For monitoring, it functions primarily as a software/protocol health view of the multicast routing plane: tracking route table sizes via hwPimStarGEntries, hwPimSGEntries, and hwPimSGRptEntries (and their per-interface counterparts) reveals multicast state scaling or unexpected route churn, while assert counters hwPimOutAsserts/hwPimInAsserts and hwPimLastAssertInterface flag repeated PIM assert conflicts indicative of a multicast forwarding loop or misconfigured RPF path. It closely mirrors the structure of the IETF PIM-MIB (RFC 5060) while being a Huawei-branded module rooted under hwPim/hwMcast with its own notification group hwPimNotifications. It is deployed on Huawei core and edge routers running PIM-SM/PIM-DM in networks that carry IP multicast traffic such as IPTV or financial market data feeds. Engineers can download the HUAWEI-PIM-STD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HUAWEI-PIM-STD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Huawei core/edge routers

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll hwPimSGEntries and hwPimStarGEntries to track the number of active (S,G) and (*,G) multicast routes on a router, watching for unexpected drops that indicate lost multicast reachability. Monitoring hwPimOutAsserts/hwPimInAsserts alongside hwPimLastAssertInterface would reveal a PIM assert war on a shared LAN segment, typically caused by two PIM routers both believing they are the forwarder for a group.

What Can Be Monitored

  • multicast route table size ((*,G)/(S,G) entries)
  • PIM keepalive period
  • register suppression time
  • PIM assert events
  • last assert interface/group

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hwPimOutAsserts OID:

Select a Huawei core/edge router running PIM-SM/PIM-DM multicast as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hwPimOutAsserts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of Asserts sent by this router. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
