What Is IANA-RTPROTO-MIB?
IANA-RTPROTO-MIB is an IANA-maintained, vendor-neutral standards MIB that defines the IANAipRouteProtocol and IANAipMRouteProtocol textual conventions used to identify which unicast or multicast routing protocol (e.g., OSPF, RIP, BGP, DVMRP, PIM) installed a given route or is running on a device. As a pure textual-conventions module, it contains no managed objects, tables, or traps of its own and thus exposes no hardware or software runtime status directly. Its sole purpose is to provide a standardized enumeration that other routing MIBs (such as the IP Forwarding Table MIB or multicast routing MIBs) import to tag routes with their originating protocol, which indirectly supports monitoring of routing software behavior and route-source diagnostics. Per its own description, changes to this module require RFC publication or IESG Designated Expert review, underscoring its role as a stable, foundational IANA registry rather than an operational data source. It is deployed universally wherever a device's routing-table MIBs are compiled, on any router or Layer-3 device regardless of vendor. An engineer scanning an IANA-RTPROTO-MIB OID list will find only these two protocol enumerations defined, with no accompanying table structure of its own.

Monitoring Examples
This module defines no managed objects -- sample_objects is empty -- only the IANAipRouteProtocol and IANAipMRouteProtocol enumerations used elsewhere. It is a textual-conventions module, so there is no direct polling scenario; instead, an admin sees its values indirectly, for example when a routing-table MIB entry reports "ospf" or "bgp" as the protocol that installed a given route using this module's enumeration.
