What Is HUAWEI-VPLS-EXT-MIB?

HUAWEI-VPLS-EXT-MIB is a Huawei enterprise MIB that extends Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) management on Huawei MPLS-capable routers and switches, adding objects beyond the base VPLS MIB. It exposes configuration and status data for MAC address learning behavior, flooding control, and service-level OAM within a VPLS instance. Its monitoring value lies in service-health visibility: it lets an operator confirm MAC learning and flooding are behaving as expected within a VPLS domain and that OAM checks are passing, which helps detect Layer 2 VPN forwarding problems. It builds directly on the base VPLS MIB concepts (and indirectly on MPLS/L2VPN standards) as a Huawei-specific extension rather than a standalone module. It is deployed on Huawei provider-edge routers offering VPLS-based Layer 2 VPN services to enterprise customers, and network engineers typically open HUAWEI-VPLS-EXT-MIB in a MIB browser alongside the base VPLS MIB to inspect its extended objects.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in HUAWEI-VPLS-EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VPLS MAC learning table
  • flooding behavior/statistics
  • service OAM session status
  • per-instance VPLS health

Supported Devices

  • Huawei NetEngine 8000 M14 — current carrier router supporting VPLS/MPLS L3VPN
  • Huawei NE40E-X8A — flagship provider-edge router, 51.2 Tbps switching capacity

Monitoring Examples

A realistic table would track per-VPLS-instance MAC address counts and flooding statistics, alongside an OAM session status object, following a typical VPLS extension Table/Entry naming pattern. An administrator would monitor MAC table size and flooding rate within a VPLS instance to catch a MAC flooding storm or an OAM session failure that signals a broken pseudowire in the VPLS mesh.

RFC description

Huawei vendor-private MIB for managing Virtual Private LAN Service (VPLS) extensions on Huawei devices.

Start monitoring Huawei MPLS-capable router/switch, e.g. NetEngine 8000/NE40E-X8A (extended VPLS) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
