Description: EMAIL-MIB module
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is EMAIL-MIB?
EMAIL-MIB is a Unix-oriented SNMP module (its objects import from the "unix" MIB branch) for monitoring an email transfer/delivery subsystem running on a host, such as a mail relay or notification service built on standard MTA tooling. It exposes counters for delivery activity, error activity, and the state of an internal delivery cache, plus a table of individual email delivery attempts with sender, receiver, channel, status, and size. Its monitoring value is squarely in software/service status: it lets an operator see whether outbound mail (often used for SNMP trap-to-email gateways or system alerting) is actually being delivered, how many deliveries are failing, and how large the pending delivery cache/queue has grown, a classic queue/job-status monitoring pattern. It depends on the "unix" enterprise MIB branch for its registration point rather than any formal IETF mail standard. It is typically deployed on Unix/Linux hosts running a mail relay or an application that emails alerts and needs SNMP-based visibility into that delivery pipeline. Engineers can download the EMAIL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in EMAIL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB
- Unix/Linux host running a mail relay or alerting service
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll eMailDeliveries and eMailErrors to see the delivery success/failure ratio for a host's outbound mail queue, and check eMailCacheSize against the eMailCache table (indexed by eMailIndex, with eMailStatus per entry) to spot a growing backlog of pending or failed messages. A specific eMailDelivery entry with a high eMailSize and a failure eMailStatus for a given eMailReceiver would flag a stuck notification meant for a particular downstream recipient or channel.
What Can Be Monitored
- email delivery count
- email error count
- delivery cache size
- per-message delivery status
- delivery channel
- message size
