What Is BSDUNIX-MIB?

BSDUNIX-MIB is a legacy MIB module for "4BSD/ISODE" entities, originating from early Unix-based SNMP agents built on the ISODE (ISO Development Environment) OSI protocol stack rather than being a general-purpose host-resource MIB. It exposes agent action controls, ISODE context and party test tables, generic test objects holding integer and string values, and low-level BSD kernel networking structures such as mbuf. Its monitoring value lies mainly in software/agent status — verifying SNMP agent test/response behavior via the ISODE test tables and agentAction, plus tracking kernel network buffer (mbuf) usage as an indicator of memory pressure or network buffer exhaustion on the host. It is tightly tied to the historical ISODE/OSI network management framework rather than modern IETF conventions, and has been effectively superseded by HOST-RESOURCES-MIB and UCD-SNMP-MIB-style modules for Unix host monitoring. It was historically deployed on early BSD Unix hosts running ISODE-based OSI/SNMP agents, and is now mainly of legacy/archival interest. Engineers can download the BSDUNIX-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BSDUNIX-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator could poll mbuf to gauge kernel network buffer memory allocation and detect signs of buffer exhaustion on a BSD host, while entries in iSODETestTable/iSODETestEntry (iSODETestInteger, iSODETestString) are primarily used to validate the SNMP agent's own test/response behavior rather than represent live host telemetry. agentAction similarly reflects agent-internal control state rather than a monitorable hardware or application metric.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using mbufs OID:

Select a BSD Unix host (legacy ISODE SNMP agent) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type mbufs into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. The number of mbufs allocated from the page pool. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
