Category: WAN

Description: Manages data link layer interface configuration and error statistics for serial WAN connections.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is DATALINK-MIB?

DATALINK-MIB is a vendor enterprise MIB for managing the data link layer of serial WAN connections, appearing to originate from a modem/remote-access product line given its references to modems, network cards, and product identity. It exposes basic device inventory (product name, system/application version) alongside serial-line hardware inventory such as number of ports, network cards, and installed modems, plus per-modem configuration like port speed and setup/AT command strings. It supports monitoring both hardware and software status of the unit — software version (systemversion, appversion) for tracking firmware currency, and hardware health via modemreport and memorysize for detecting a failed or misconfigured modem card or memory exhaustion. It is a self-contained enterprise MIB with no explicit dependency on other MIBs. Typical deployment is a modem bank or remote-access/dial-up router monitored for line and modem availability in a legacy WAN or backup-link scenario. Engineers can download the DATALINK-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in DATALINK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • serial/dial-up modem bank or remote-access router

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll datalinkThisProduct along with productname/systemversion/appversion to confirm firmware version across a fleet of remote-access units, and check numberports against netcard/modems counts to verify all expected modem hardware is present. modemreport and modemportspeed per modem would be checked to detect a modem that has dropped to a lower negotiated speed or stopped reporting, indicating a line or hardware fault; modemsetupstring confirms the AT command profile in use.

What Can Be Monitored

  • product/firmware version
  • installed modem and network card count
  • modem port speed
  • modem status report
  • memory size
  • network enabled state
