Category: WAN
Description: Provides management objects for the Pipex (PIPE) ISP network infrastructure, covering peering links and service availability.

What Is PIPE-MIB?
PIPE-MIB is a vendor MIB associated with Pipex, a UK-based ISP, used to manage and monitor "pipe" objects representing network peering links or service paths within the ISP's infrastructure. It exposes traffic and connection statistics per pipe, including inbound/outbound/total byte counts, live connection counts, new connection counts, and packet counts in each direction. This MIB is focused on monitoring software/service-level performance -- specifically real-time traffic volume and connection-count statistics per pipe -- which network operations staff use to detect a saturated or underutilized peering link, or unusual spikes/drops in connection counts suggesting a routing or capacity issue. Given its narrow scope, it does not appear to have significant dependencies beyond standard SNMP framework conventions. It was deployed within Pipex's ISP network operations for monitoring peering link/service availability and utilization. Engineers can download the PIPE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PIPE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- ISP peering/service infrastructure (Pipex network elements)
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll pipeStatTable entries -- pipeByteCountIn, pipeByteCountOut, and pipeByteCountTotal -- for a given pipeName to track traffic volume on that peering link, and monitor pipeLiveConnections and pipeNewConnections to watch for unusual connection churn. A pipe showing pipeByteCountTotal flatlining while pipeLiveConnections remains high could indicate a stalled or congested link despite active sessions.
What Can Be Monitored
- byte counts in/out/total per pipe
- live connection count per pipe
- new connection count per pipe
- packet counts in/out per pipe
