Category: VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys

Description: Manages Cabletron protocol translation tables for bridging between dissimilar LAN technologies.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CTRON-TRANSLATION-MIB?

This is a Cabletron Systems (a legacy enterprise networking vendor whose assets were later absorbed into Enterasys/Extreme Networks) private MIB for managing protocol translation tables used when bridging between dissimilar LAN technologies, such as Ethernet and Token Ring, within Cabletron switching/bridging equipment. It is primarily a configuration module, with the one confirmed object - ctTransRifDbAgingTimer - indicating it manages a Routing Information Field (RIF) database aging timer used in source-route translational bridging between Token Ring and other LAN segments. Its hardware/software status relevance is indirect: the RIF database aging timer governs how long learned Token Ring route information is cached in the bridge's software tables before being aged out, so monitoring or tuning it affects bridging table freshness and correctness rather than exposing sensor-level hardware data. It complements IEEE 802.1D-style bridging concepts and Cabletron's broader private bridge MIB suite rather than a single IETF standard. It is typically deployed on legacy Cabletron LAN switches/bridges operating in mixed Ethernet/Token Ring environments needing translational bridging between the two technologies, and a CTRON-TRANSLATION-MIB download is often the starting point for administrators maintaining that environment today.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-TRANSLATION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron LAN switch/bridge (Ethernet-Token Ring translational bridging)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll or set ctTransRifDbAgingTimer to control how long RIF (source-route bridging) entries remain valid in the translation bridge's database before being flushed. If ctTransRifDbAgingTimer is set too low, Token Ring routes could be aged out and relearned excessively, causing transient translation failures between Ethernet and Token Ring segments; too high a value could leave stale routes in place after a topology change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RIF database aging timer value
