Organization: Enterasys Networks, Inc

Last Updated: 2003-01-29

Category: VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys

Description: Manages Cabletron VLAN classification rules for assigning frames to VLANs based on MAC, IP, or protocol.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CTRON-VLAN-CLASSIFY-MIB?

CTRON-VLAN-CLASSIFY-MIB, described in its module description as the Enterasys VLAN Classify MIB, manages VLAN classification rules on Enterasys (formerly Cabletron) switches, letting frames be assigned to a VLAN based on packet content such as MAC address, IP address, or protocol type rather than just port or 802.1Q tag. It exposes a classification rule table where each entry defines a data-matching criterion (meaning, value, and mask), the target VLAN index, which ports the rule applies to (ingress list), and the entry's row status. This is primarily a configuration/policy MIB rather than a hardware sensor MIB: its monitoring value is in confirming classification rules are correctly provisioned and active (via ctVlanClassifyRowStatus) and in checking ctVlanClassifyNumEntries against ctVlanClassifyMaxEntries to see if the rule table is nearing its capacity limit. It builds on standard 802.1Q VLAN concepts and is typically used alongside CTRON-Q-BRIDGE-MIB-EXT and the base Q-BRIDGE-MIB, since classified frames still map onto standard VLAN forwarding tables. It is deployed on Enterasys managed Ethernet switches that support content-based (as opposed to purely tag-based) VLAN assignment, and administrators can download the CTRON-VLAN-CLASSIFY-MIB file to load it directly into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-VLAN-CLASSIFY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Enterasys (formerly Cabletron) managed Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll ctVlanClassifyTable entries, checking ctVlanClassifyDataMeaning, ctVlanClassifyDataVal, and ctVlanClassifyDataMask together to confirm a classification rule matches the intended MAC/IP/protocol pattern, and ctVlanClassifyVlanIndex to verify it assigns matching frames to the correct VLAN. Comparing ctVlanClassifyNumEntries to ctVlanClassifyMaxEntries reveals whether the switch is approaching its classification-rule capacity, which would explain new rules failing to apply. A rule entry with ctVlanClassifyRowStatus showing not-in-service instead of active would indicate a misconfigured or disabled classification rule that isn't actually being enforced.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VLAN classification rule table entries
  • classification rule capacity usage
  • per-rule VLAN assignment
  • per-rule ingress port list
  • row/entry status of classification rules
