Category: VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Cabletron/Enterasys

Description: Extends Cabletron VLAN management with proprietary attributes for enhanced VLAN policy configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CTRON-VLAN-EXTENSIONS-MIB?

CTRON-VLAN-EXTENSIONS-MIB is a Cabletron Systems enterprise-specific MIB (ctVlanExt) that extends IEEE 802.1Q VLAN bridge management with Cabletron's proprietary configuration attributes, built on the 802.1Q/D9 draft specification. It exposes the supported VLAN protocol version (ctVlanVersionNumber), whether the device allows flexible VLAN grouping (ctVlanSupportedOperationalMode, ctVlanCurrentOperationalMode -- the number of significant VLAN ID bits used to scope unicast-bridging groups), a reset-to-defaults control (ctVlanResetDefaults), default-VLAN egress stickiness behavior (ctVlanDefaultVIDStickyEgress), a per-slot bitmask of VLAN-capable ports (ctVlanSupportedPortTable), and the device's VLAN address-learning mode (ctVlanLearningMode: IVL, SVL, or combined SVL/IVL). This data helps an operator confirm which ports participate in VLAN bridging and whether VLAN grouping/learning behavior matches the intended network segmentation design. It depends on the base CTRON-MIB-NAMES OID registry and is deployed on Cabletron 802.1Q-compliant switches alongside standard bridge and VLAN MIBs; network teams can download the CTRON-VLAN-EXTENSIONS-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CTRON-VLAN-EXTENSIONS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Cabletron Systems 802.1Q-compliant switches

Monitoring Examples

An operator reads ctVlanCurrentOperationalMode to confirm the configured VLAN-grouping granularity matches the intended segmentation policy, then checks ctVlanSupportedPortTable to verify a newly added port is included in the VLAN-capable bitmask; a port missing from that bitmask would explain why VLAN tagging isn't taking effect on it.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VLAN protocol version support
  • VLAN operational grouping mode (bit significance)
  • VLAN-capable port bitmask per slot
  • VLAN address-learning mode (IVL/SVL)
  • default-VLAN egress stickiness setting
  • reset-to-defaults control state
