What Is COM21-HCXETH-MIB?

COM21-HCXETH-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module from Com21, Inc. (module com21HcxEth, part number 005-0025-00) that manages the Ethernet-side functionality of the Com21 ComController cable headend system used in early HFC/DOCSIS deployments. It defines groups for card-level management (com21HcxEtherUnitTable, tracking hcxEtherCardType, hcxEtherHardwareVersion, and hcxEtherUnitPrimServState), port/VLAN-level configuration (com21HcxEtherPortTable, with hcxEtherPortService and bandwidth attributes like hcxEtherAggrDnStrmCbrRate and hcxEtherAggrUpStrmMaxRate), port statistics (com21HcxEtherStatsTable), and per-subscriber-terminal-unit traffic counters (com21HcxEtherStuStatsTable, keyed by hcxEtherStuStatsMacAddr with hcxEtherStuCurrDnstrmBytes and hcxEtherStuCurrUpstrmAal5CrcErrs). It imports shared identifiers from COM21-HCX-MIB and alarm/event objects from COM21-HCXALM-MIB, and is deployed alongside the standard MIB-II interfaces group on the same ComController chassis; administrators can download the COM21-HCXETH-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in COM21-HCXETH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls hcxEtherStuCurrUpstrmAal5CrcErrs and hcxEtherStuCurrDnstrmDropPkts per subscriber MAC address in the com21HcxEtherStuStatsTable to check per-cable-modem link quality, and a rising count of AAL5 CRC errors or downstream dropped packets would indicate a noisy upstream return path or a failing ComPort connection for that subscriber.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using hcxEtherCurrCollisions OID:

Select a Com21 ComController HCX headend Ethernet card (legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type hcxEtherCurrCollisions into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports contains the number of detected collisions in the current 15 minute period. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
