What Is CISCO-SNA-LLC-MIB?

This is a Cisco enterprise MIB for managing IEEE 802.2 Logical Link Control (LLC) parameters and statistics used to carry SNA (Systems Network Architecture) traffic over Cisco router LLC2 ports. It exposes per-port LLC administrative configuration: maximum SAPs, maximum outstanding command/response counts, max PDU size, unacknowledged I-PDU windows for send/receive, retransmission limits, and acknowledgment/P-bit timers. It supports monitoring the operational configuration and performance tuning of LLC data-link connections carrying legacy SNA traffic, useful for diagnosing retransmission or throughput problems on SNA-over-LAN links, a protocol/software-level health indicator rather than a physical hardware one. It builds on the IEEE 802.2 LLC standard and is used alongside Cisco's broader SNA/DLSw feature set for legacy mainframe connectivity. It is deployed on Cisco routers providing SNA/APPN connectivity between mainframes and LAN-attached devices, where network engineers tune and monitor per-port LLC parameters to keep legacy SNA sessions stable. Engineers can download the CISCO-SNA-LLC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

Monitoring Examples

An engineer inspects llcPortAdminTable/llcPortAdminEntry rows, indexed by llcPortVirtualIndex and named via llcPortAdminName, to review llcPortAdminMaxSaps and the llcPortAdminMaxUnackedIPDUsSend/Rcv window sizes configured for an SNA-carrying LLC port. If llcPortAdminMaxRetransmits is being hit frequently alongside a low llcPortAdminAckTimer, that suggests the LLC2 connection is retransmitting excessively, a sign of an unstable or congested link. The llcPortAdminPbitTimer and llcPortAdminMaxPDUOctets settings, grouped under llcPortGroup and llcSapGroup, are checked to confirm SAP-level parameters match what the mainframe-side SNA gateway expects.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using llcPortStatsPDUsIn OID:

Select a Cisco router (SNA/DLSw gateway, legacy) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type llcPortStatsPDUsIn into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object reflects the total number of PDUs that have been received on this port. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
